Leading Through the Storm

Snow in the South—rare, surprising, and a reminder of how quickly life can shift. This January, I made a huge move to Omaha that has been equally exciting, challenging, and far from my comfort zone and home. Throughout the process, what I’ve realized is that change isn’t just something to weather—it presents an opportunity to grow! New challenges and experiences have an uncanny ability to push us to adapt, find clarity, and discover new ways to lead, create, and thrive—and that’s exactly what we should embrace moving forward.

Change, whether planned or unexpected, has a way of testing our adaptability and creativity. It challenges us to rethink what’s possible, realign with our goals, and move forward with purpose. Here are three ways to navigate those pivotal moments:

1. Anchor yourself in purpose. In times of change, it’s easy to feel untethered. That’s why reconnecting with your purpose is critical. Ask yourself: Why do I do what I do? What impact am I striving for? Your purpose isn’t just a motivational phrase—it’s a compass that helps you decide where to focus your energy. When everything else feels uncertain, your purpose keeps you grounded and moving in the right direction.

2. Adapt with intention. Change often requires us to pivot, but pivots don’t mean abandoning the vision. Take time to evaluate what adjustments will have the most meaningful impact. Maybe it’s rethinking a process, letting go of something that’s no longer serving you, or stepping into something new with confidence. Intentional adaptation isn’t about reacting; it’s about proactively shaping the path forward while staying true to your core values and goals.

3. Be the calm. Leadership during disruption isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about setting the tone. Calm leaders inspire confidence, and that energy ripples out to clients, teams, and collaborators. Take a moment to listen, create clarity where there’s confusion, and offer reassurance where there’s doubt. By showing calm and focus, you create a steadying presence that helps others find their own footing.
